I won't lie; there have been moments when the weight of responsibilities, coupled with the lack of resources specifically tailored for dads, made me feel incredibly alone. I've looked around and thought, "Surely, I can't be the only dad feeling this way?" And that's why I'm here, sharing my journey with you. Because I believe that by exploring this void together, we can find ways to understand it, embrace it, and ultimately fill it with memories, lessons, and connections.
The Void Dad's Dilemma
Navigating the world as a stay-at-home dad has its unique set of challenges. I often find myself caught between expectations and the reality of my day-to-day life. Let me paint a picture for you.
Imagine dropping off your oldest at kindergarten and your middle one at preschool. You're surrounded by moms, effortlessly chatting away, making plans, and scheduling playdates. Then there's us, trying to fit in, trying to make a connection. But it's not as easy as it looks. For me being an introvert (I can be extroverted as well, but it depends on the situation!), striking up a conversation doesn't really come naturally to me. And when it comes to scheduling playdates, it feels like navigating a maze. Why does it seem so complicated? Is it because I'm a dad? These questions often linger in my mind.
Then there's the question of what a stay-at-home dad should do throughout the day. Sure, feeding the kids and keeping them entertained is a given. The amount of playgrounds the kiddos and I have seen is wonderful and I will have to share some of them with you later. But what about the rest? Housework and cleaning have never been my strong suit. And honestly, they don't top my list of priorities. I know, I know, it might sound odd to some, and I am working at changing this, but that's the truth. My mind often drifts to the thought of contributing financially to the household. Even though my incredible wife has a stable job that takes care of our bills, the weight of providing, especially after having built a retail business for 23 years, is a constant presence.
